On April 20, the girls’ varsity soccer team came away with a 3-1 victory over the Falls Church Jaguars.
The team had a strong start, showing good ball possession and movement across the field. Second year varsity player and sophomore Anna Heilferty scored the Raiders’ first goal, which was a beautiful kick from the left side of the 18. Heilferty also pulled off a few tricks, and made multiple long runs during the game. The second goal came shortly after, by means of another perfect strike, this time from defender and sophomore Mariana Hershner.
The Stuart team continued to possess the ball throughout the game, not giving the Jaguars an opportunity to score until late in the second half. Though the Jaguars made it 2-1 late in the second half, freshman forward Emma Nguyen was able to put a third ball into the net.
The team used its speed to its advantage against Falls Church by continually sending through balls for teammates to run onto, with which the Falls Church defense could not compete.
Stuart’s sophomore goalie Julia Utting made crucial saves, mainly in the beginning of the second half. Overall, the Raiders’ defense had important stops and was able to convert those possessions into offensive runs. The game finished at 3-1, giving the Raiders another win under their belt and improving their record to 5-1 on the season. The team will take on the Hayfield Hawks tonight at Hayfield.
