This 2016 season is the start of a new chapter for the Raider football team. They have come into the season with a new coach, new players and even new jerseys. Coach Martin will has begun his first season with the team and has already created a new atmosphere within the program. Coming into the final game of the season, the raiders will have the opportunity to finish the season with five wins and a .500 record.
up the season against Mount Vernon at home on Sep 1. The raiders relied on their defense to keep close throughout out much of the game, as the entered the fourth quarter only down 13-7, but eventually the Majors pulled away and won 30-7.
A loss didn’t keep the team down for long however, as they traveled to Herndon the following week in a very tough matchup. The game was a shootout, as both teams had to rely on their offenses until the very last minute. The raiders were able to pull through in the last 30 seconds as senior Edwin Garcia ran up the middle to get the go ahead touchdown that gave the raiders’ a 50-46 win. The stat sheet was filled after the contest with Junior Ayhan Yenican pouring in over 300 yards and 4 TD, and Garcia gaining 271 yards combined rushing and receiving. The result was a statement victory for the raiders as they were able to pull off the upset.
After two straight losses to Annandale and Lee, the raiders stepped up and went on a three game win streak, that featured wins against Thomas Edison, Thomas Jefferson and Wakefield. The team was dominant in all aspects a during this stretch as they outscored opponents 84-27.
Despite falling to Potomac Falls on homecoming week and losing a tough game to Marshall, the raiders’ still have the very important bell game against Falls Church to look forward to. “We know that we have gotten a lot better as a team with Coach Martin, and I think that we will have some people surprised at the end of the season”, said Senior Kevin Flores.
