This issue’s athlete of the month is swim and dive team member Aidan Jones. Jones has been diving since he was four years old. Since then, he has been diving for Sleepy Hollow Bath and Racquet, Dominion Dive Club, Alexandria Dive Club and Stuart. This past December, Jones committed to dive for the division one school George Mason University for the next four years.
Since his freshman year, Jones has been one of the few members of the dive team at Stuart, but this has not prevented him from dominating his competition across the county. In his sophomore and junior year, Jones advanced all the way to states, where he finished 9th and 5th place, respectively. This season on January 23, Jones placed first in the meet against Falls Church, securing his first place conference position.
Jones has an impressive list of dive accomplishments. He has competed in the Northern Virginia Swimming League (VHSL) All Star meet five times, placing third the last two years. He has competed in the VHSL Synchro meet twice, placing second both times, and he was won the coaches and sportsmanship award at SHBR. Jones’s best scores are a 220 from a 6 dive set and 320 from an 11 dive set.
On January 26, Jones competed in the 5A North Capitol Conference 13 dive meet where he placed first in each event and first overall. Jones will go on to compete in Regionals on February 2 at Washington and Lee, despite automatically qualifying for States in his Conference meet, and will travel to Oak Marr Rec Center on February 17 for States.
“[Dive] is fun for me. I love learning new dives, making up new ones, and improving ones I already have. I also really like winning competitions,” said Jones.
